The Cardinal suggested the King that he should give a big ball (dance party) for the queen, as she loved to dance. However, he also convinced the King to insist the queen to wear the diamond tags the King gifted to her. The Cardinal knew that the Queen had already gifted those royal tags to the Duke of Buckingham, so she would fall into the trap. On the other hand, Cardinal also launched Milady, who successfully stole 2 diamond tags out of a total of 12 at a ball in Britian.

So when d'Artagnan reached the Duke's to get back the gifted diamond tags, Duke is horrified to see that ribbons were cut and 2 diamond tags were missing
