A ballad stanza is a four-line stanza, known as a quatrain, mostly found in folk ballads.

It consists of alternating four and three stress lines. Usually the second and fourth lines rhyme most of the time.

A lot of time, assonance is placed instead of rhyme. Longer first and third lines are rarely rhymed.
