B - to reveal that he loves Octavie

    Explanation:

"The Locket" is a short story by Kate Chopin set during the American Civil War.

The story begins with four Confederate soldiers resting on the slope of a hill.

One od them is Edmond, whose locket seen around his neck draws the attention of the others and from the small talk we find out that he has been in war for a year and a half.

Soon after, Edmond remembers the day he got the locket. It was given to him by Octavie, his lover, before he went to war. The sole purpose of the flashback was to introduce Octavia's character and the origin of the locket - important things for the second part of the story.
