    By using the term "polar opposite", the poet, Mary Nagy, means that she and her husband have different likes, interests and opinions, which are so far from each other that they end up being opposite, as far apart as the North Pole from the South Pole.

    In other words, it means that one's interests are diametrically opposed to the interests of the other, since there is nothing more opposite than one pole with respect to the other.
