Diabetic eye diseases are group of disease conditions which affect diabetic patients. There are basically two types: diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema [DME]. Diabetic retinopathy affect the blood vessels in the light sensitive part of the eye [retina] leading to vision impairment and blindness. DME occurs as a consequence of diabetic retinopathy. It is caused by a swelling in the part of the retina called the macula.
