The theme of the story for the scarlet ibis is PRIDE.

    Explanation:

The main theme of the story ''The Scarlet Ibis'' by ''James Hurst'' is Pride. Narrator's Brother Doodle has a disability, so narrator is ashamed and embarrassed because of his brother. Such pride is harmful. He is so mean to his brother that he even thinks of killing him.

Instead of the encouraging his brother, he is ashamed of him and his own pride kills his brother. One day, they find a "scarlet ibis" in their yard. Since Doodle was sad, he buried it. During the storm when they were running back home, narrator ran ahead of his brother without caring about him. He got exhausted and died. He symbolises scarlet ibis who was buried.
