How is power represented by Tom in the novel the great Gatsby?

Tom plays an important role in the theme of Power and Responsibility. He plays a very dominant and aggressive character. Nick describes him as having, "Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward" (Fitzgerald 7).

Tom values power over others to a great extent. At the beginning of the novel, he is unable to fully control his wife. She pokes fun at him and his ideas, calls him a "brute" even though he hates that word, is annoyed with him for his infidelity, and feels disillusioned about their life together
