The main character, Stargirl is a highly unusual person. She comes into the school and changes everything. She's a leader, people follow her without even knowing. When Jerry Spinelli says this, eat he is trying to imply is that Stargirl has came and layed a new culture upon her peers, and her community. She is an awakening. She is something new, like a burst of fresh air. Her community has changed due to her. She's broken them out of a boring spell, and now people are no longer dormant, living in a bland, gray society. She has added, color, texture, and a new meaning to their lives.
