The excerpt relies on pathos by making strong emotional claims. There is no mention of the document's authors, except as the collective "we" that symbolizes the unity of all Americans in this matter. These are strong emotional claims because of relying on "the Protection of Divine Providence" (God is with them) and the pledge of what is most sacred to any person - life, fortune, and honor.
