What effect do short, simple sentences have on a story's pacing?

    Short and simple sentences speed up the pacing of the story. On the other hand, long and detailed sentences would slow down the story. Here is an example:

    "Jerry ran. He ran extremely fast. He grabbed onto a tree and climbed upwards."
