"'Nothing here but kitchen things,' he said, with a little laugh for the insignificance of kitchen things."

I haven't read the story but as we all know, the kitchen is the woman's domain. It is her world, where she is queen and when the sheriff belittled the kitchen as though it is something insignificant, it seems as though he thinks that Mrs. Wright is insignificant.

The kitchen is the place were food are prepared and cooked to satisfy the basic needs of the family. It usually is the heart of the home and it represents the woman of the house. For the sheriff to be disrespectful about the kitchen things is being disrespectful to the woman of the house.
