    the receiver of the action in the sentence is essential to the context of the sentence. reporting a crime when the criminal is unknown / making a statement when the facts are unclear writing about a scientific project.

    The active voice is the direct doer of the action.

    It follows this sequence: subject - verb - action

    An example is Paul kicked the ball.

    Paul is the subject, kicked is the verb, ball is the action.

    While on the other hand, the passive voice is the receiver of the action.

    It follows this sequence: subject - past participle of a transitive verb - object

    An example is The ball was kicked by Paul.

    or The ball was to be kicked by Paul
