A complex sentence is one where an independent clause (or a clause that can stand on its own) is joined by one or more dependent clauses (or clauses that can't stand on their own).
The fog obscured the road and gently breathed life down into the city below it.
Obscuring the view, the rain quietly beat down onto mountains, a refreshing drink for the long-standing drought.
