Presently I saw a man leaning on a two-strand barbed-wire fence, the wires fixed not to posts but to crooked tree limbs stuck in the ground. The man wore a dark hat, and jeans and long jacket washed palest blue with lighter places at knees and elbows. His pale eyes were frosted with sun glare and his lips scaly as snakeskin. What is the purpose of the description in this passage from Travels with Charley? a) to explain how he develops friendships with people b) to show his fear of the man c) to show that people in the Bad Lands are dangerous d) to show the similarity between the man and the place

Answer: I would contend that the right answer is the D) To show the similarity between the man and the place.

Explanation: In this excerpt from Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, the author and his dog are passing through an area of the United States known as the Bad Lands. After briefly describing it in the previous paragraph, saying that it certainly "deserves that name," he recalls the encounter with a man, with a Badlander, who, much like the land, was silent, dull, dry (both literally and metaphorically), sharp, reserved, unfriendly, and unwelcoming.
