Answer: The sailors believe it is a place of evil, but Rainsford thinks they are just superstitious.

    Explanation:

In the Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell, a man named Rainsford finds himself on an island, where he is hunted by a mad man, called Zaroff.

Before Rainsford ends up on the island, we find out that the sailors are frightened by this place. When Rainsford and Whitney have a conversation while passing by the island, Whitney says that "Sailors have a curious dread of the place." Rainsford, however, does not understand why. This conversation foreshadows the events that are going to take place later in the story - Rainsford will himself be frightened by the 'evil' Zaroff.
