The Great Gatsby takes place in the great depression and a primary source is a source that was written by someone who witnessed the event. For example, a journal of a child who went through the great depression makes an excellent primary source. You could see historical documents written by the government at that time - Herbert Hoover was the president or you could focus in on state and local governments to see how they responded to the economic crisis.
