How do writers use direct characterization in a story

Direct characterization is a method where the writer simply describes the character as he is and what he is like in a direct, straightforward way. Direct characterization is also a way for the author to describe the character's motivation for the actions he takes. This is in contrast to indirect characterization where the writer uses the character's speech, appearance and actions to describe his character.

A simple example of direct characterization is:

"John is a man who lives on a farm and loves riding horses."
