Robert E Lee wrote an eloquent letter to his son in January of 1861, just prior to the Civil War. In it he describes why it would be a bad decision for the southern states to attempt to secede from the Union. He thoughtfully argues that the Founding Fathers intended a perpetual Union, and that anarchy would be the result of a secession. He also weighs the possibility of Civil War and describes what a disaster it would be.
