Cities have struggled with urban unrest as poorer communities face discrimination and the deterioration of their resources. Policies of segregation and processes of separation can lead to feelings of lost hope, resulting in riots and violence.

Urban unrest is the state of turmoil within a community. This could be caused by economic, political, and social factors that could negatively impact a specific group of people within the community or even the community as a whole.

    Contributing Factors

Discrimination and racism are some of the contributors to urban unrest. This is when a treatment given to a small group of people is different from those given to the majority of the community's population. One example is what happened in 1967 when police raided a bar in Detroit. This incident led to a series of confrontations between some members of the African-American community and the police. This led to riots, looting, economic losses, and death.

Another contributing factor is the deterioration of the peace and order condition in the community. As the agitation increases, people will be more volatile and can sometimes even be more prone to violence. In this situation, the authorities will find a hard time controlling and restoring the peace in the community.
