They are sometimes also called a trophic pyramid or an ecological pyramid. The width of each bar in the pyramid shows the level of energy available within each trophic level. This shows how the energy flows through the food chain. The graph also represents when an ecosystem is healthy in the sense that with a healthy ecosystem the graph produces a symmetrical pyramid. In healthy systems more energy needs to be available at the lower levels to support the organisms that are in abundance versus those that are fewer in number.
