The two official languages of Canada are English and French. However, these are not the only languages that are used by the population in the country. English is the native language of roughly 56% of the population, while French is the language of 20.6%. Both languages have official federal status, and all federal legislation is enacted bilingually.

However, Canada has a very high rate of immigration, and its multicultural society extends to the languages spoken in the country. Around 20% of the population of the country speaks a language other than English or French at home. Out of these, 6.4 million speak an immigrant language, while roughly 213,000 speak an Aboriginal language.
