It is called the 'greenhouse' effect since it shares many similarities with greenhouses. UV rays can come in through the atmosphere (windows), but can't escape. They give off heat, and basically the planet (or greenhouse) becomes a giant oven. Some people consider this to be a part of global warming.

Green house effect is the trapping of heat by some gases! mainly in our earth this is increasing due to CO2!
