Sleet is rain that freezes in the air and comes down as a little ice pellet; On the other hand, freezing rain comes down as rain, but freezes when it hits the ground or some other surface. In other words, a thin ice coating that forms when rain freezes over trees and streets is called sleet. So it is a mixture of falling rain and snow.
