The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is an act with which the Great Lakes should be protected and restored as much as possible. The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater reservoir on the planet, but the human activities have largely destroyed these waters. The waters have become polluted, making them not suitable for drinking, in some areas even for recreation, badly affecting the flora and fauna in it as well. Another problem are the invasion species brought by the humans, as these species are threatening the native species that can not cope with them.

In order to stop this, there's numerous things that are set as goals of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, including control of the pollution, removing of certain objects that pollute, controlling the invasive species and stopping the introduction of new ones etc. Also, the prime goal is to return the waters to their natural state, where they are clean and to be suitable for usage.
