A fault is a large crack in the earth's crust where one part of the crust has moved against another part. Faults are a sign that there are powerful forces deep underground.

A normal fault is the kind of fault formed when a block that is next to another moves down. The other block is left standing at it was originally. This is caused by forces called tensional forces.

A normal fault is also known as a gravity fault or tension fault.
