Fossils, the preserved remains of animal and plant life, are mostly found embedded in sedimentary rock. From the group of sedimentary rocks, the ones that most often contain fossils are shale, limestone and sandstone. This types of rock are the softest ones from the three groups of rocks, so the fossils can merge with them most easily.
