Why do astronomers observing distant galaxies talk about looking backward in time?

    Because light takes time for us to observe it so when astronomers say that a certain galaxy or a certain star or a planet is for example 100 light years away they mean that it takes 100 years for light to travel that distance so you see the object how it was 100 years ago
