    The subduction zones are the region where the two distinct types of plates collide with one another with great compressional force. Due to this collision, the heavier plate subducts and as this plate reaches the layer of the asthenosphere, it melts and reacts with the uprising magma. This magma then slowly rises upward, and give rise to the formation of volcanoes and volcanic island at the surface of the over-riding plate.

    This movement of plates releases a large amount of energy from the interior as the rocks try to adjust themselves in the most preferred way. This energy is released in the form of seismic waves, and these are the most effective waves that cause earthquakes affecting a large number of places.
