Why do Europeans still ship goods via canals and rivers?

Europeans still ship goods using canals and rivers because it is cheaper than using other shiping methods

Well you you look at the continent there are many bodies of water but none of them are huge like oceans. Because of this they take advantge of the rivers and canals they have or else they would have to pay a lot more people for transportation on land.
