Deseret was one of the names considered for the official designation of the state of Utah. According to the Mormons, the word means honeybee and has its origins in the language of one of the four original peoples who settled the Americas in ancient times.
In the latter part of the 1800s the proposed state of Deseret was actually several times larger than present day Utah.
