The South American plate and the Nazca plate are two plates that interact with each other as they share a boundary. The South American plate is a continental plate, while the Nazca plate is an oceanic plate.

There are several things that have occurred and are still going on because of the interaction between these two plates:

A subduction zone has been formed, thus an oceanic trench with it, where the Nazca plate subducts below the South American plate. An orogeny occurred, which resulted in the formation of the Andean mountain range in the along the western coastline of South America. Lots of volcanoes have formed in close proximity to the boundary, resulting in the formation of volcanic mountains and volcanic islands. Earthquakes have been a common occurrence in the area, often having devastating effects.
