This is because of the equators position on the earth. If you look at a map with a equator, "An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°," said Oxford Dictionaries, then you will see it pass right through South America and Africa. It passes through Indonesia and its minor islands, but that is an exception.
