The muscle shortens. Isometric muscle contraction occurs.

    Explanation:

When referring to an isometric muscle contraction, it is understood as to when there is no movement or displacement of the muscle. Only within the same muscle. And there is usually no joint, or limb motion. Being so, it is concluded that no work is done as a result. This is why, whenever a load or a force, greater or equal to the force exerted by the muscle is applied, it is said that there will be a contraction of the muscle. And that it will be isometric. A good example of this is whenever someone carrying a box. The box exerts pressure downwards because of the weight. Yet the muscles will exert an equal force upwards in order to maintain it stable. The muscles will be isometrically contracting.
