A majority of Midwestern settlers (after the explorers and, of course, the Native Americans who lived there first) were of central and northern European descent especially Germans and Norwegians. For example, northern Europeans made up a bulk of the dairy farmers in Wisconsin and central European immigrants, receiving land under the Homestead Act, settled the region to farm as they did in Europe.
