When countries unite, this creates a larger market for products and services at cheaper prices because of the border tariffs on goods and services, across borders when the countries were divided initially, get obviated. The movement of people across the expanded region - that is now one country - is now eased due to lack of border restrictions. The opposite is true when a larger country splits into smaller regions.
