    Answer with Explanation:

The "Tiananmen Square protests" which occurred in Beijing in the year 1989 was commonly known as "June Fourth Incident." This consisted of protests led by students. It started on April 15 and was suppressed by martial law on June 4.

The root cause of the movements started when Deng Xiaoping led the reformation of the Chinese economy. The main goal of the reformation was to lower the roles of the state in the country's economy. Although this was well-received at the beginning, it caused several problems such as "corruption" and "nepotism." This angered the people, especially the intellectuals. They believe that only "democratic reformation" is the solution. Even high-paying jobs were based not on education basis but "favoritism" and "nepotism." Because this affected the students, especially when it comes to applying jobs and working abroad, the student's interest in the political system grew. The students then started demonstrating protests. From the city of Heifei, it spread to Shanghai, Beijing, and other cities. The protests even grew stronger after the death of Hu Yaobang, a high-ranking official of the People's Republic of China. Students believed that his death was highly related to his being forced to resign. Hunger strike followed and protests escalated. Around 300,000 people joined the hunger strike at the Square on May 13. There were daily marches and class boycott. Many students joined hoping that the government will hear their plea. This caused an embarrassment, especially that the country was supposed to hold a welcoming ceremony of Gorbachev. The government then decided to put the protesters under surveillance and impose martial law as this was the only option. Protesters were captured and punished. Thousands of protesters attacked the troopers. Soldiers were attacked and beaten to death. This resulted to mass arrest with many students being tried and executed.

As a result of this, the China had a hard time being accepted into the World Trade Organization. This also resulted to many of the former freedoms being revoked to the people. Firm control was also imposed, especially to the press and the media. The event is being remembered as something dark due to the massacres which occurred. Many people are trying to forget it although it consists of important events in China's history.
