This ability is based on the absolute and relative dating of rock.

    Explanation:

To determine age of the earth several techniques and methods are adopted like carbon dating, dendrochronology, absolute and relative dating of rock. In dendrochronology the stem of the trees cut into circular form and as it takes to form hundred of years it provide an assumption of earth's age.

In sedimentary rock sediments are deposited layer after layer through thousand of years. If we take some sample of these sediment deposition of different era we can easily determine the age of the earth. In between two different layers there is an unconformity which shows different features of two underlying layers.
