Adsorption mechanisms (Hydration) of clay minerals / colloids
Clay minerals have weekly bound hydrated interlayers, These interlayers can be displaced by other cautions from an aqueous solution to give an ion-exchange reaction. The heat of the adsorption if the first monolayer is much stronger than the heat of absorption of the second and all layers. The layer of thickness of double layers increases with decreased cation valance. In cesium absorption of clay particles, The beidellite and Vermicute, illite. The Beidellite can swell when the Cs enters between sheets it shrinks Cs and is trapped (There are hydrate ions surrounding these layers) The vermiculite, illite has a frayed edge site and takes longer to access once Cs is trapped theres not an escape, Small ratios to whole charge
main causes of Cs entrapment in clay particles. Phyllosiciates are sheets of Sio4, tetrahedra) has siloxane dirtrigonal cavity similar to the sizes of Cs which are found in Clay particle layers. There is a large hydrogen bond within the clay when it meets water the water locks in those absorbed layers and has different properties compared to that of the bulk water due to strong ionic attractions from the surface. In Clay there is also Na montmorillonite - thick double layer, LL=710
Cs Montmorillonite thinner layers, LL=510
