The partition of Southeast Asia is similar to the partition of Africa in few ways.

In both, Southeast Asia and Africa, the territories that were gaining independence were basically marked by the colonialists. The borders were not representing ethnic unity, religious unity, political views, of the coutnries that were colonized.

This kind of partition led to countries were multiple ethnic groups were put into the same territory, despite those ethnic groups having tensions between them for hundreds or even thousands of years. The religious and political views were also neglected, so large masses of people with different religions and different political views were put into the same borders.

The end result of this kind of partition was lot of tensions, conflicts, civil wars, coups, genocides, political instability, which made ''third world countries'' out of most of them.
