The four variables used by the United Nations to measure the development of a country are:

    1. Population; the population is a very important factor for the development, how much of a work force there is, the qualification and level of education, age structure etc. all influence the development of the country.

    2. Resources; the resources are the basis for the industry, so the more resources and the more valuable once a country has the bigger the chances for the industry to grow and be powerful.

    3. Environment; the environment is the factor that represents the quality of life available for people and other living organisms which depends from the environmental conditions and the care for them.

    4. Development; the development indicates the progress of the country on every level, though most oftenly the economic development is in the spotlight and how much of an economic growth does the country has.
