Several things happen, it implodes it goes through nuclear fusion where new heavier elements are produced, these elements can come together and, over long periods of time, can form new stars or planets

If a really huge star dies, it has so much mass that after the helium is used up, it still has enough carbon to fuse it into heavy elements like iron
