    C. in mountainous regions

    Explanation:

The majority of the rivers begin their flow, or rather have their springs, in mountainous regions. The main reason for this is that the mountains are a natural barrier of the air masses, which in turn makes the air masses accumulate and the end result is rainfall. The rain falls on the mountains, and the some of the water accumulates in the mountains. The water gradually finds its way on the surface through cracks or rocks that are not very hard, and that results in a formation of a spring. The spring is the beginning of a river, or we can say that multiple springs combined give rise to a stream, and than multiple streams combined give rise to a river. Another thing is that the water is flowing from higher areas toward lower areas, so it is nothing weird that most of them start at the mountains and end up at low valleys that border a lake or a sea.
