There are several different mechanisms of evolution: natural selection, mutation, migration and genetic drift. Natural selection occurs in a species population and is influenced by their environment, including the climate, their predators, their prey or food source, natural disasters and manmade influences, like antibacterial soap or pollution. The simplest way to explain natural selection is through an example. Say there's a species of flower with two color variations, pink and brown. The flower relies on a hummingbird to pollinate it. The pink flowers are more visible than the brown flowers since there are a lot of other brown things in the environment, like soil and tree branches, so the hummingbird pollinates the pink flowers more often. Through time, less and less brown flowers are pollinated because of this lack of visibility, and thus, after many generations, only the pink flowers remain.
