What are the characteristics of a mercantile city

    The mercantile cities were cities that were very powerful, both economically and politically. They also were able to sustain themselves independently of the central government. This types of cities were controlled by a local businessmen/merchants, and the main income was from international trade of goods. The best example of this type of city was Liverpool, England.
