How do an erupting volcano affect earth's surface?

    Assuming this is a write-in question:

    Volcanoes can create new land entirely. When a volcano erupts, lava flows down and cools. As it cools, it hardens into new land. The ash that falls onto the ground it can destroy entire ecosystems, but also works as an extremely effective fertilizer. The reason the Hawaiin islands exist is because of volcanic eruptions.
