Gneiss, Phyllite, Schist, and Slates are kinds of foliated metamorphic rocks. They appear to have a layered or banded appearance because of their direct exposure to heat and pressure. The opposite of foliated rocks are called non-foliated metamorphic rocks. Examples of these include hornfels, marble, quartzite, among others.
