India was part of the British Empire. But more resistance rose against this rule, and hindus and muslims started to get into conflicts. The British decided they had 'to get the hell out of there' before anything escalated. But the main factor that the British eventually retreated was a campaign led by Mohatamas Ghandi (I think that's his name). Instead of leading a ferocious and destructive revolt against the British, he called for a peaceful resistance, meaning, demonstrating, but not fighting. This is an example that has been followed by demonstrators all over the world. Unfortunately, Ghandi was later shot by a radical Hindu, after India became a state. The conflicts between muslims and hindus did escalate, leading to the founding of Pakistan and Myammar, muslims states and India, hindu state.
