Catalonia is an important region of Spain, because that's where a lot Spain's commercial and industrial facilities are, so they do a lot of economic good for Spain. That's where Barcelona is and they have their own unique culture and language. They are currently fighting for independence from Spain, due to oppressive conditions. Even with independence, they'll most likely be okay without Spain, since their GDP (gross domestic product) is higher than Spain overall.
