Why was Ghana considered the "crossroads of trade?"

Ghana is considered to be the "crossroads of trade" because it lies in between the Saharan Caravans to the Mediterranean markets up North. All supplies of African raw materials that come from the South pass through Ghana and towards these trade routes.
