    Continental drift is the theory that continents were once ONE huge landmass and each continent shifted relative to other continents over many years. In 1912, Alfred Wegener named the single landmass Pangea.

    According to Wegener, Pangea split about 200 million years ago, giving way to the oceans currently separating the continents. Prior to 1912, some scientists such as Roberto Mantovani had attribute the separation of the continents to volcanic activity, but this has since been proven to be wrong.
